Drodzy Przyjaciele,
 
Życzę Wam wszystkiego najlepszego w nowym roku 2010. Trudno jest uwierzyć, że już minęło dwa i pół roku od mojej wizyty w Polsce. Była to wielce inspirująca podróż, w czasie której tak wiele dowiedziałem się o muzyce jazzowej epoki Zimnej Wojny od ludzi, którzy tworzyli historię tej muzyki.

Pozwólcie, że przybliżę Wam, co się dzieje u Davida i Ioli Brubecków. Miałem szczęście spędzić w lipcu 2009 roku jeden dzień w ich domu w stanie Connecticut. Biorąc pod uwagę ich wiek, Iola i David mają się znakomicie.

6 grudnia, w dniu swoich 89 urodzin, David otrzymał nagrodę
Kennedy Center Honors. Jest to jedno z największych wyróżnień przyznawanych w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Na uroczystości tuż obok Dave’a i Ioli siedziała prezydencka para, Barack Obama i Michele! Był to wieczór godny zapamiętania, który obejrzałem wraz z moją żoną parę tygodni później podczas ogólnokrajowej transmisji. David w dalszym ciągu podróżuje i komponuje nowe utwory z pomocą swojej żony.

Chciałbym się również podzielić z Wami postępami w mojej pracy nad historyczną wizytą Dave’a Brubecka w Polsce w 1958 roku. Przede wszystkim, dowiedziałem się, ze amerykańskie czasopismo „Jazz Perspectives” zaakceptowało do druku mój esej. Dziennik ten jest drukowany trzy razy w roku i wydawany przez znawców jazzu, Johna Howlanda i Lewisa Portera. Esej ma być opublikowany pod koniec roku 2010 lub na początku 2011. Mam nadzieję, że po publikacji w „Jazz Perspectives” , będę mógł podzielić się polską wersją tego eseju ze studentami w Polsce i w Stanach.

Dwa cieszące się szacunkiem naukowe ośrodki zaprosiły mnie do prezentacji moich badań nad podróżą Brubecka do Polski w 1958 roku. Zeszłego lipca, miałem odczyt na piętnastej konferencji International Association for the Study of Popular Music, LASPM (Międzynarodowy Związek Badań nad Muzyką Rozrywkową), na Uniwersytecie w Liverpoolu. Mój wykład spotkał się z dużym zainteresowaniem i będzie opublikowany elektronicznie przez LASPM w 2010 roku.

 W marcu tego roku, zaprezentuję podobny wykład na konferencji Society for American Music, SAM (Towarzystwo Muzyki Amerykańskiej), w kanadyjskiej Ottawie. Tytuł tego odczytu to „Dźwięk wolności: stosunek Polaków do wizyty Dave’a Brubecka w Polsce”. To wspaniałe, że praca naukowa najpierw skierowała mnie do Polski, a teraz dzielę się jej wynikami w Wielkiej Brytanii i w Kanadzie. Również tutaj, w Stanach, wygłosiłem kilka wykładów na temat znaczenia polskiej podróży Davida dla Polaków i Amerykanów.

Mój drugi projekt, tym razem związany tak z Davidem jak i również  Iolą Brubeck, rozwija się pomyślnie. Staram się znaleźć odpowiedź na pytanie: dlaczego wyjątkowy musical jazzowy napisany przez obydwoje Brubecków, „The Real Ambassadors”, został wystawiony tylko jeden raz w roku 1962. Musical ten poruszył zarówno Louisa Armstronga, jak i Carmen McRae, trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross oraz otrzymał opinię jednego z najważniejszych utworów jazzowych. Myślę, że jestem na dobrej drodze, aby rozwiązać zagadkę, dlaczego to zapomniane dzieło nigdy nie osiągnęło popularności na jaką zasługiwało.

W czasie pracy nad tym projektem, miałem okazję przeprowadzić wywiady z Jonem Hendricksem, Yolandą Bavan, Joe’em Morello i Eugene’em Wrightem. Zwiedziłem również wystawę Louisa Armstronga w Nowym Jorku i spędziłem cały dzień na nagrywaniu rozmów z Iolą i Davidem. Podczas urlopu naukowego w tym semestrze, mam nadzieję zakończyć pracę nad tym tematem, jak również nad kilkoma innymi projektami.

Dear Friends:  
 
I hope that this letter finds you in good health and spirits as the new year of 2010 begins. It’s hard to believe that it has been two and one-half years since my very productive and inspirational visit to Poland to learn about jazz in the Cold War era from those people who helped to make that history happen.
 
First, let me update you on how Dave and Iola Brubeck are getting along. I was privileged to spend a day with them in July 2009 at their home in Connecticut , conducting interviews about another research project I will mention later in this letter. Considering their ages, both Iola and Dave were doing quite well. On December 6, Dave celebrated his 89th birthday by receiving one of the highest awards that the US bestows, the Kennedy Center Honors.
President and Mrs. Obama were sitting just a few seats away from Dave and Iola! It was truly a night to remember, one which my wife and I enjoyed a few weeks later when it was televised across the entire country. Dave is still touring some and writing new pieces almost non-stop with the aid of Iola.
 
Permit me to share with you some news on progress in presenting some of my research and ideas about Dave Brubeck’s historic 1958 visit to Poland . First, my essay has been accepted for publication in the US by “Jazz Perspectives,” which is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal that is published three times a year and edited by jazz scholars John Howland and Lewis Porter. It is due to be published in the late 2010 or early 2011 issue. Once it has been published in “Jazz Perspectives.” I hope to commission a Polish-language translation so that it can be shared with students in Poland and the USA .
 
Additionally, two well-regarded scholarly societies invited me to present my research about Polish jazz and Brubeck’s 1958 tour. Last July, I presented a paper at the 15th Biennial conference of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM) held at the University of Liverpool . The paper was well-received and will be published electronically later this year as part of the IASPM’s proceedings.
 
This coming March, I have been invited to present a similar paper at the conference of the Society for American Music (SAM) which will be held in Ottawa, Canada. The title of this paper is “Freedom Sounds: The Polish Response to the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s State Department Tour of Poland.” It’s remarkable that my research first led me to Poland and now it has taken me to the UK and Canada to share the story of 1950s Polish jazz and Brubeck. I’ve also given a number of related talks to students and the general public about Dave’s Polish tour and what it meant to people in Poland and here in the US .
 
Let me also share that my second reearch project involving Dave and Iola Brubeck is also progressing nicely. I am studying why the unique jazz musical that Iola and Dave wrote, titled “The Real Ambassadors,” which starred Louis Armstrong, Carmen McRae and Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross, was only performed one time in 1962, even though it received reviews claiming it was one of the most important works in jazz created to that time. To me, this was a mystery, and I believe that I am well along in uncovering why this forgotten masterpiece never gained the notoriety or audience which it may have deserved. As part of this project, I’ve been fortunate to interview Jon Hendricks, Yolande Bavan, Joe Morello, and Eugene Wright; visit the Louis Armstrong Collection in New York City ; and spend a day interviewing and recording Iola and Dave. This semester I have been granted a research sabbatical so I hope to have my essay about “The Real Ambassadors” as well as a few other research projects completed this May.
